Joshua Zirkzee grew up in the Netherlands, a country with a strong footballing tradition and a reputation for developing technically gifted players. From an early age, he progressed through youth football and gained experience at several clubs.
His youth career included VV Hekelingen, Spartaan ’20, ADO Den Haag, and Feyenoord. Each stage helped him develop his technical skills, understanding of the game, and ability to compete against players of a similar age.
In 2017, Zirkzee moved to Bayern Munich’s youth system. This was a significant step because the German club offered access to advanced training facilities, experienced coaches, and a competitive development structure.
At Bayern, he continued to improve his finishing, movement, and positional awareness. He also learned to adapt to a different football culture and the demands of playing in Germany.
His progress through youth and reserve football eventually opened the door to senior appearances. Although he still needed regular playing time to develop, his early experience at Bayern provided a valuable foundation for his professional career.
Joshua Zirkzee at Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich played an important role in Zirkzee’s introduction to senior European football. The club gave him opportunities to train and compete in an environment where players are expected to maintain high technical and physical standards.
He made senior appearances for Bayern and experienced domestic and European competitions. Playing for a club with significant expectations helped him understand the importance of tactical discipline, preparation, and consistency.
During his time with Bayern, Zirkzee was part of squads that won several major honours, including the Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League. He was also associated with the club’s FIFA Club World Cup success in 2021.
However, Bayern had considerable competition for attacking positions. Securing regular first-team minutes was challenging for a young forward who was still developing.
Moving away from the club on loan became an opportunity to gain more experience and demonstrate his abilities in different leagues.
Loan Spells at Parma and Anderlecht
Zirkzee joined Parma on loan in 2021, beginning a period of experience in Italian football. The move introduced him to the tactical demands of Serie A, where positioning, defensive organisation, and decision-making are especially important.
His opportunities at Parma were limited, but the experience still provided exposure to senior competition and a different playing environment.
He later joined Anderlecht in Belgium for the 2021–22 season. This proved to be a more productive period in his development because he received more opportunities to contribute to the team’s attack.
At Anderlecht, Zirkzee demonstrated his ability to score goals, combine with teammates, and operate in different attacking situations. The experience helped him gain confidence and improve his understanding of the responsibilities of a centre-forward.
His performances in Belgium made him a more experienced player and prepared him for the next stage of his career.
Breakthrough at Bologna
In 2022, Zirkzee moved permanently from Bayern Munich to Bologna. His time at the Italian club became one of the most important periods of his professional development.

The 2023–24 season was particularly important. Zirkzee scored 11 goals in Serie A and provided four assists in the competition. His contribution helped Bologna secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
His performances earned widespread attention because he offered more than a conventional goal-scoring threat. He could receive the ball under pressure, carry it forward, and connect midfield play with the attacking line.
Zirkzee’s development at Bologna demonstrated how a forward can influence matches through movement, creativity, and teamwork as well as goals.
