Lydia Pinkham
Lydia Pinkham was one of the first millionaires in the United States. In fact, Pinkham’s company earned more money than most businesses at one time.
Her company used groundbreaking advertising techniques to promote their products. For example, they printed Lydia’s portrait on the product labels and encouraged readers to write to her. By doing so, they created a woman-to-woman relationship between Lydia and her customers. She responded to all letters, and published them in her company’s Pinkham Pamphlets.
Anna Sutherland Bissell
Anna Sutherland Bissell is one of America’s first female CEOs. She was only 19 years old when she married Melville Bissell and became joint-owner of the Bissell Sweeper Company. Together they developed and marketed a carpet sweeper that was a massive success. By 1899, the company had grown to be the largest carpet cleaning company in the world. During her career, she was also the first business woman to offer a pension plan to her employees and became one of the first female business leaders to join the National Hardware Men’s Association.
Anna Sutherland Bissell was born in River John, Nova Scotia, and was the daughter of William and Eleanor Sutherland. She and Melville married when she was 19, and moved to Wisconsin. In 1889, Melville died of pneumonia, leaving his widowed mother with a company she had grown to love. In 1891, Anna Bissell became the first female CEO of the Bissell Corporation and eventually became the country’s first female CEO.
Annie Malone
Despite her success, Annie Malone was not without her flaws. Her generosity elevated her stature in the community, but her business also suffered from her generosity. She gave away a large part of her wealth to various organizations, such as the African American Land-Grant Colleges. She also left the day-to-day management of her business to her husband and other managers, some of whom were inexperienced and dishonest.
Annie Turnbo Malone was born in 1869 and was the tenth of eleven children. She was fascinated by the science behind chemistry, and she began to develop hair products for black women. She was particularly interested in developing hair straightening products that wouldn’t damage hair follicles. She died in 1957 in St. Louis, Missouri, at the age of 80.
